Rylee Erisman Smashes National High School Record in 100 Free! | Florida 4A State Championships (2025)

In a thrilling display of aquatic prowess, Rylee Erisman, a junior at Windermere High School, has shattered the National High School record in the 100-meter freestyle with a breathtaking time of 46.73 seconds. But here's the twist: this record was previously held by the legendary Gretchen Walsh, whose time of 46.98 seconds stood strong for five years.

The stage was set at the 2025 FHSAA Swimming & Diving Championships in Ocala, Florida, where Erisman took the spotlight. This competition, held on November 14-15, 2025, witnessed a new star in the making. Erisman's achievement is even more remarkable considering she fell just short of breaking the record last year with a time of 47.14 seconds, a whisker away from Abbey Weitzeil's public schools record.

And this is where it gets interesting. Traditionally, swimming records are separated for public and independent schools. Gretchen Walsh, who went on to achieve greatness at the University of Virginia, will retain the independent school record, while Erisman's name will be etched in history as the public school record holder. However, Erisman's time is functionally the fastest ever in high school competition, surpassing even Weitzeil's impressive mark of 47.09 from 2015.

A closer look at the splits reveals a fascinating story. Erisman's 50-meter split of 22.75 seconds was slightly slower than Walsh's 22.66, but she made up for it in the second half. Her 100-meter split of 23.98 seconds was significantly faster than Walsh's 24.32, ultimately giving her the edge in the overall time.

What's even more impressive is that Erisman's best time, a stunning 46.69, was achieved at the 2024 Junior Nationals while representing her club, the Windermere Lakers. This time not only broke the 15-16 National Age Group record but also set the stage for a remarkable summer, where she claimed the NAG record in the 100-meter freestyle and an impressive eight medals at the Junior World Championships.

At the FHSAA Championships, Erisman dominated, winning all four of her events. She began by anchoring the 200 medley with a swift 21.51 seconds, securing a comfortable victory for Windermere. In the 50-meter freestyle, she clocked a 21.67, narrowly missing her own national public school record of 21.61 set last year. After her record-breaking 100-meter freestyle performance, she capped off the day by anchoring another Windermere relay to victory, splitting 47.48 seconds and securing a commanding win.

Despite Erisman's heroics, the team title went to a formidable Riverview Sarasota squad, who outperformed Windermere 395-305. Erisman's college plans are yet to be announced, but she has visited Texas, Tennessee, Michigan, Cal, and Virginia, leaving everyone curious about her future in the pool.

Stay tuned for more in-depth coverage of the FHSAA State Championships, where records were broken and legends were made. And the question remains: will Erisman continue to dominate in the college circuit? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
