Is the Boston Red Sox pitching staff about to get a major upgrade? According to MLB insiders, the Red Sox are in a prime position to make a splash in the trade market for some top-tier starting pitchers. Let's dive into the potential moves that could reshape their rotation.
ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel have identified the top trade candidates, and guess who's on the radar? Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow is looking to add some serious firepower to the team's pitching staff.
First up, the obvious choice: Detroit Tigers ace, Tarik Skubal. The ESPN insiders have linked the Red Sox to this potential acquisition, alongside other teams like the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Baltimore Orioles, and San Francisco Giants. But here's where it gets controversial... There's only a 10% chance the Tigers will actually trade Skubal. Despite the buzz, the Tigers seem determined to keep their star pitcher, who is a free agent after 2026. Skubal is a key player for Detroit, and they're aiming to contend next season.
In 2025, Skubal, at 29 years old, won his second consecutive American League Cy Young Award, leading the league with a 2.21 ERA. He also topped the AL with a 7.6 WAR and a 0.89 WHIP. He finished second in strikeouts with a career-best 241 whiffs.
Next on the list is Minnesota Twins right-hander, Joe Ryan. The Red Sox have a history with Ryan, having tried to acquire him before the 2025 trade deadline. ESPN gives a 50% chance of Ryan being traded, with the Red Sox, Orioles, Giants, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, and Houston Astros as potential landing spots.
Ryan, also 29, had a career-low 3.42 ERA in 2025 and tied his personal best with 13 wins. He threw a career-high 171 innings, striking out 194 batters, and setting a new personal best with 4.5 WAR.
But wait, there's more! Starting pitching isn't the Red Sox's biggest need, thanks to their recent acquisition of Sonny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals. However, at 36, Gray might not be the long-term solution as a solid No. 2 behind Garrett Crochet.
Acquiring either Skubal or Ryan would give the Red Sox a formidable 1-2 punch in their starting rotation.
What do you think, Red Sox Nation? Would you be thrilled to see Skubal or Ryan in a Red Sox uniform? Or do you think the team should focus on other areas? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
