In a concerning development, the Democratic Republic of Congo is witnessing the wastage of approximately one-third of the Japanese mpox vaccines donated to combat the clade Ib outbreak. This critical issue arises from the challenge of storing the LC16 vaccine, which is only approved for children. The World Health Organization (WHO) downgraded mpox from a global health emergency in September, but the storage problem persists. The LC16 vaccine, made by KM Biologics, is technically complex and requires specific storage conditions. Each vial contains 250 powder doses that must be mixed before use and cannot be stored for more than a few hours once opened. This means that leftover vaccine goes to waste if turnout is low. The Japanese government, unaware of the wastage issue, has expressed trust in the Congo government's ability to utilize the doses effectively. The Congo has recorded 53,657 mpox cases this year, down from 67,247 last year. Despite the challenges, the vaccine has helped tackle mpox, particularly in Kinshasa. The Congo's mpox lead, Cris Kacita, is working tirelessly to prevent loss and ensure efficient vaccine utilization. The situation highlights the delicate balance between vaccine availability and storage, and the need for innovative solutions to prevent wastage.
